Scaling PCP surveillance across a large upstream portfolio

The challenge

A major upstream operator was managing a large portfolio of progressing cavity pump (PCP) wells across multiple basins. Manual surveillance was consuming significant engineer time, and setpoint optimisation was inconsistent – driven by whoever had capacity rather than by field-wide priority. Production performance across the fleet varied more than it should have.

The approach

Nexgineer™ was deployed as an advisory layer connected to the operator's existing historian and SCADA infrastructure. The platform screened every PCP well daily, ranked optimisation opportunities by predicted production impact, and surfaced recommended setpoint changes with supporting trend evidence for engineer review.

The outcome

Surveillance efficiency improved by 70% – engineers shifted from reactive dashboard review to a daily prioritised action workflow. Average time saved per engineer reached approximately 10 hours per week. Setpoint optimisation became consistent and field-wide rather than reactive and individual-well-focused.

Optimising a dewatering field across a multi-basin CSG operation

The challenge

In a coal seam gas operation, field performance depends heavily on the pace and consistency of dewatering across the well fleet. Engineers were managing large numbers of wells at different stages of the dewatering curve, with highly variable lift requirements and production rates. Understanding where to focus optimisation effort – and predicting the production impact of setpoint changes – required significant manual analysis.

The approach

Nexgineer™ was configured to account for the specific characteristics of CSG dewatering operations – including the distinction between wells actively dewatering and wells producing gas. The APC layer evaluated lift system settings across the fleet and ranked interventions by predicted impact on both water production rate and gas uplift, depending on where each well sat in the dewatering curve.

The outcome

Production uplift varied depending on field maturity and dewatering stage – up to 5% in fields with established gas production. Surveillance workload reduced materially, and the team gained a clearer, field-wide view of optimisation opportunity at any point in time.

Advisory-first deployment alongside existing control infrastructure

The challenge

A production engineering team evaluating AI-driven optimisation had a clear requirement: any new platform needed to integrate with existing infrastructure without requiring changes to control system architecture or operational procedures. The team also needed to validate model accuracy before trusting any automation – and wanted a clear path from advisory to supervised automation as confidence grew.

The approach

Nexgineer™ was deployed in advisory mode – surfacing prioritised recommendations with full supporting context, but applying no actions autonomously. The platform connected to the existing historian via standard data interfaces and required no modifications to SCADA or RTU infrastructure. Engineers reviewed recommendations daily and applied actions manually through existing control systems.

The outcome

The advisory deployment achieved the efficiency gains of the wider Nexgineer™ customer base without requiring any OT changes. Over the deployment period, the team built a validated track record of recommendation accuracy, establishing the foundation for a supervised automation rollout in subsequent phases.
